Maria Saleh Mahameed in a new group show at MAXXI Museum, Rome

We are delighted to announce the participation of Maria Saleh Mahmeed in a new group exhibition, ‘Conscious Collective’ at Maxxi museum, Rome, along side Tsibi Geva and Noa Yekutieli. The exhibition is curated by Bartolomeo Pietromarchi and Shai Baitel, associate curator Elena Motisi. The show explores the intricate intersection of cultural realities, identities, places, memories, and bonds.

Saleh Mahameed is showcasing her large scale charcoal on canvas piece ‘Ludmila’ (2022). The work portrays her mother’s (Ludmila) first encounter with the city of Umm el-Fahem, Israel, where Saleh Mahameed was born and raised. Ludmila was born in Kiev, Ukraine, where she met Saleh Mahameed’s father, and immigrated with him back to his hometown of Umm el-Fahem. The artist’s complex identity in terms of nationality, religion, culture (Muslim/Christian, Palestinian/Israeli), next to motherhood, longing, memories while creating a new life, are all embodied in this 11 meter long work. During the time when the work was made, there was the outbreak of war between Russia and the Ukraine, which is also represented here.

Exhibition Opening: Thursday 16 March, 2023, 7pm | exhibition will be on through June 4, 2023
